Process Monitor: Basic Operation

Let's say that we've used network tracing to narrow down a slow response time problem to a Windows application server. That's great, and perhaps we have everything we need to go to the application support team, but maybe, just maybe, the cause of the problem is in the supporting infrastructure. We can use perfmon to check for overload but it would be nice to go a bit further.

Process Monitor can give us another level of visibility. We can analyse the way an application is using the system resources such as the registry and the file system, and measure associated delays. Best of all this is a Microsoft tool that is completely free of charge.

In this video we'll take a look at the basic features of Process Monitor.

I was in a bit of a hurry with this week's blog and at one point I mention "... the Sysinternals pages on Microsoft." What I actually meant to refer to was the Systinternals pages on microsoft.com.

Anyhow, I hope you find this brief introduction useful.

Best regards...Paul
